Why the new Apple iPhone 14 Pro feature called Dynamic Island is mind-blowing…
…but not that much?
Apple recently announced the brand new iPhone 14 Pro, including the new “Dynamic Island” feature allowed by iOS 16. A beautiful name for, in the end, the pill-shaped notch, dressed in an interface to display informations and interact with (notifications, FaceID, music control etc…).

The UX and UI design community is talking a lot about this element, Apple has always been a forerunner and leader about designs, physical or digital.
Design is always about answering to a problem we may encounter. Apple and Dynamic Island are resolving three problems by doing this. These problems are:
- How to turn an object users don’t want, into a wanted and useful object?
- How can we use the notch so it can be useful for the users?
- How can we bring relevant informations to the user without taking to much space.
Apple answered by merging interfaces, a digital element, to a physical element, the notch. This way, users will think that the notch is not a problem and an unwanted element anymore, but a real feature. Why? Because the feature is useful, the notch, (by itself) is not. All of this brings the “Woooow” effects every designers (and users) are yelling.
